FULL METAL JACKET

Title Sequence / Illustration, Motion Graphics
Program: After Effects (Ae), Clip Studio Paint, Photoshop (Ps)

Instructor: Prof. Brian Cassidy

This title sequence is for the acclaimed Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket. This movie is a critique of war's dehumanizing effect on humanity through rigorous training and combat. It shows you this transformation through a couple key characters such as Joker, Pyle, and Animal Mother. I used photocollage and photo montage (aka photobashing) of images and key scenes throughout the movie to create the base frames to animate. I then inverted them to portray an atmosphere of horror and tragedy. Lastly, I added music and other sound effects to unify the experience.

DESIGN PROCESS

After watching the movie, it was time to storyboard. Storyboarding is a much more efficient process in completing the title sequence since it helps solve any potential problems along the way. It establishes good composition, consistent text placements, and potential scene transitions.

Using screenshots from the movie and other Vietnam War era relate images, I broke the picture down into 4 separate layers to animate in after effects. The first layer, the largest figures, or objects, serve as the foreground, the second layer, any secondary and less prominent figures, serve as the middle ground, and the third layer, the textures and type, serve as the background. Then, the images were inverted from black and white. Lastly, to tie it to the theme of tragedy and war textures were added.
