This book focuses on one of the four elements of hip hop, breaking. The time span it covers starts from when it started, in the early 1970’s, up to the present, 2022. It covers topics such as why it started, the purpose it served, and how it has changed to revolve around competitions. Breaking is an incredibly intense activity which requires a lot of body strength and conditioning to do. It’s especially evident when it comes to moves that involve a lot of power like the windmill and airflare. The culture around breaking is just as powerful as the dance itself. To honor and pay respect the culture, I decided to illustrate it. I used a lot of dynamic elements such as explosive movements, gestural backgrounds, and active text to bring it to life.
Research was the very first step to figure out what information I should include to influence how I wanted to sequence the book. Out of the bulk of the research, I chose to highlight the most prominent events that led to what breaking is known for today and to serve as a foundation to expand from. In each illustration, the figures are either encased within compositional shapes like triangles, or have gestures that are carried throughout the spread. Depending on the figures and the context, it will either be active or grounded. All of the compositions contain energy, some more than others. To place the illustrations in a contemporary context and compliment the dynamism of the dance, I used a comic book style with prismatic rendering.
